Iliotibial Tract

The Tensor Fascia Lata is short and strap-like. It passes downward and slightly backward to insert into the anterior part of the Iliotibial Tract. It is enclosed within the fascia lata, which splits to go upon both sides of it. Acting through the iliotibial tract, the tensor fascia lata extends the knee with lateral rotation of the leg; it may also assist in abduction and medial rotation of the thigh, but its role as an abductor has been contested.

To produce flexion of the leg at the hip joint, the tensor fascia lata acts with the iliopsoas. It definitely tenses the fascia lata and iliotibial tract to provide support to the femur on the tibia when standing.

When runners train extensively on a downhill terrain, a problem results from a constant need to control the bent knee.
