Medial Pterygoid

The Medial Pterygoid has deep and superficial heads arising from the lateral pterygoid plate and palatine bone (maxilla). It inserts upon the medial aspect of the angle of the mandible. This muscle mirrors the masseter in position and action. The medial pterygoid elevates, protracts and laterally displaces the mandible to the opposite side for chewing. It is innervated by the nerve to the medial pterygoid, main trunk of the mandibular nerve (V3).
