Accessory Meningeal Artery

Middle Meningeal Artery

The Middle Meningeal artery, a large branch of the retromandibular (first) segment of the maxillary artery. The middle meningeal artery passes through the foramen spinosum and arrives in the middle cranial fossa between the periosteal dura and bone and bifurcates into the large frontal branch and smaller parietal branch. An Accessory Meningeal artery may arise from the middle meningeal or neighboring branches and enter the foramen ovale to supply the dura and semilunar ganglion.

Fracture of the pterion and subsequent shear of the middle meningeal artery results in epidural hematoma.
