Suboccipital Muscles

Rectus Capitis Posterior Major and Minor

Obliquus Capitis Inferior and Superior

The Suboccipital muscles function to posture and rotate the head. Included in this muscle group are: Rectus Capitis Posterior Major and Minor, Obliquus Capitis Inferior and Superior. The suboccipital nerve innervates this group of muscles.

The rectus capitis posterior major and the obliquus capitis inferior rotate the head. The rectus capitis posterior minor and obliquus capitis superior cross the atlanto-occipital joints, disallowing rotation of the head.
