Greater Occipital Nerve
The Greater Occipital nerve
is the medial branch of the dorsal ramus of C2. It courses obliquely between
the semispinalis capitis and obliquus capitis inferior muscles before ascending
over the back of the scalp as far anterior as the vertex of the skull.
The posterior half of the "skull cap" area is supplied by the large medial branch of the dorsal ramus of C2 (greater occipital). The dorsal rami of C1, C7, C8, L4, and L5 lack posterior midline cutaneous distribution.
