Shortly before its entrance into the femoral vein, the great saphenous receives companion veins (Superficial Epigastric, Superficial Circumflex Iliac, and External Pudendal) of smaller superficial arteries which can exhibit a variable pattern of openings and occasionally open directly into the femoral vein.
