Ninth Costal Cartilage

The transpyloric plane is approximated by half the distance between the suprasternal notch and the symphysis pubis or a transverse plane through the point where the linea semilunaris meets the tip of the Ninth Costal Cartilage. An easy approximation is a horizontal line joining the medial epicondyles when the upper limbs are at the side. The following structures lie in the transpyloric plane: L1/L2 intervertebral discs, end of spinal cord, beginning of thoracic duct, hili of kidneys, beginning of portal vein, neck of pancreas, and fundus of the gallbladder.
