Inferior Phrenic Artery

The abdominal aorta gives rise to paired (dorsal) vessels, the inferior phrenic and lumbar arteries to the posterior body wall. The Inferior Phrenic arises from both sides of the anterior surface of the abdominal aorta below the aortic hiatus. There are alternate sources for the origin of the inferior phrenic arteries. The right inferior phrenic crosses posterior to the inferior vena cava. The left inferior phrenic passes upward medial to the left adrenal gland, lateral to the esophagus.
